After our crazy adventures (some of us had flight issues and landed in Quayaqil), we are all finally in beautiful Cuenca! We all met our host families at the airport and have been treated really well beyond our expectations. We feel blessed that they have offered us a chance to stay in their homes and eat delicious home cooked food including an abundance of fresh Ecuadorian fruits.
On our first day in Cuenca, we were treated to a breakfast and orientation by the directors of the program at The University of Cuenca. We had a chance to learn about the customs and history of the indigenous peoples. After this introduction we took an hour bus ride, passing many green mountains of the Andes, to the indigenious village of Shina. There we met some of the children of the school. These children are already bilingual in Kichwa and Spanish, plus they are going to begin learning English. We spent our time getting to know the children, playing games, and taking lots of pictures. We can tell this will be an extremely rewarding week as we already have begun to build a bond with these children even though we are struggling with a language barrier. After playing for a few hours, we were surprised with a hot lunch that included soup, chicken, rice, and vegetables. We were touched by their generosity.
We are absolutely thrilled to be here and can´t wait to see what the rest of the week will bring!
